How Should I Store My Perfume Oils?
Share
You've invested in a beautiful perfume oil. Now the question is: how do you keep it smelling exactly as it did the day you opened it? Proper storage is one of the most overlooked aspects of fragrance care — and it makes a significant difference to the longevity and quality of your scent.
Keep Them Away From Light
Light — particularly direct sunlight and UV rays — is the enemy of fragrance. Exposure to light breaks down the aromatic molecules in your perfume oil, causing it to degrade, discolour, and smell different over time. Store your oils in a dark place: a drawer, a cabinet, or a dedicated fragrance box. This is especially important for delicate florals like our Viva La Rose Perfume Oil and Petal Blossom Perfume Oil, whose top notes are particularly sensitive to light exposure.
Avoid Heat and Temperature Fluctuations
Heat accelerates the chemical reactions that degrade fragrance. Bathrooms — despite being the most common place people store perfume — are actually one of the worst environments, thanks to steam, heat, and humidity. Instead, store your oils somewhere with a stable, cool temperature. A bedroom drawer or a cool closet shelf is ideal.
Rich, resinous oils like our Amber Saffron Perfume Oil and Smoky Vanilla Perfume Oil are more robust, but even they benefit from cool, stable storage.
Keep Them Upright and Sealed
Always store perfume oils upright to prevent leakage and minimise the surface area of oil exposed to air inside the bottle. Ensure the cap or dropper is tightly sealed after each use — oxidation from air exposure is another key cause of fragrance degradation.
How Long Do Perfume Oils Last?
Stored correctly, a high-quality perfume oil can last anywhere from 3 to 5 years — and some, particularly those built on stable base notes like oud, amber, and sandalwood, can last even longer. Our Bois De Santal Perfume Oil and Marine Symphony Perfume Oil are excellent examples of well-structured oils that age gracefully when stored properly.
A Simple Rule
Cool, dark, and upright. Follow those three principles and your perfume oils will reward you with months — or years — of beautiful, true-to-bottle scent. Browse our full collection and build a wardrobe worth preserving.
