What is Sillage and Why Does it Matter?
Anthology BeautyShare
If you've ever walked into a room and caught the lingering trace of someone's fragrance long after they've left, you've experienced sillage. It's one of the most evocative qualities a perfume can possess — and one of the most misunderstood.
The Definition
Sillage (pronounced see-yazh) is a French word meaning "wake" — as in the trail left behind a boat moving through water. In fragrance, it refers to the scent trail a perfume leaves in the air as you move through a space. A fragrance with strong sillage announces your presence before you arrive and lingers after you've gone. A fragrance with soft sillage stays close to the skin, intimate and personal.
Sillage vs. Longevity
These two qualities are related but distinct. Longevity refers to how long a fragrance lasts on your skin. Sillage refers to how far it projects into the surrounding air. A fragrance can have excellent longevity but soft sillage — meaning it stays close to your skin for hours but doesn't fill a room. Perfume oils are a perfect example of this: they tend to have outstanding longevity with intimate, skin-close sillage.
Why Sillage Matters
The sillage of a fragrance shapes how others experience you. A bold, projecting sillage makes a statement — it's confident, dramatic, unforgettable. Our Rose on Fire Perfume Oil and Femme Fatale Perfume Oil carry a sillage that commands attention, rich and enveloping.
A softer sillage, by contrast, is an invitation — it draws people closer, creating an air of mystery and intimacy. Our Whispering Petals Perfume Oil and Serene Bloom Perfume Oil are beautifully skin-close, revealing themselves only to those near enough to notice.
How to Control Your Sillage
The amount you apply and where you apply it directly affects sillage. Pulse points on the neck and chest project more than wrists alone. Applying to hair amplifies sillage significantly, as hair fibres hold and diffuse scent into the air as you move. For a bolder trail, try our Amber Saffron 540 Perfume Oil or Portofino Bleu Perfume Oil applied to the neck and hair.
